FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

NEW GIFTS OR CREATURES ALBUM AVAILABLE SEPTEMBER 22, 2017

KALAMAZOO, MI (August 22, 2017) - Indie folk/Americana act Gifts or Creatures will release their third full-length album with Earthwork Music on September 22nd to coincide with a tour beginning on September 29. The new record, Fair Mitten (New Songs of the Historic Great Lakes Basin), explores the last four centuries in the Great Lakes region. It covers topics such as the demise of the Arctic grayling, trapping and trading, downtown Chicago, and Pontiac's Rebellion.

The album digs deep into the history of the area; it celebrates it, and at times laments the historical stress within the region. Brandon and Bethany Foote tracked the new songs intermittently over an eighteen-month period alongside Seth Bernard, Dan Rickabus (The Crane Wives) and Max Lockwood (May Erlewine, Big Dudee Roo). Ian Gorman at La Luna Recording in Kalamazoo, Michigan engineered the record. The duo’s signature sound of vocal harmonies paired with electric guitar and Wurlitzer electric piano are the centerpiece of the album.

“Ever since I was a child, I have been enamored by the boundless blue water and thick north woods of Michigan," says Brandon. "The striking and stunning combination of wooded land and freshwater seascapes has a rich history that is often overshadowed by the coastal cities and towns of North America. I have traveled around the country and always miss the north woods when away. The Great Lakes region has always felt like a secret undiscovered jewel to me." Brandon spent the last three years digging into the history of the area, dreaming and conceiving the modern soundtrack to the past. He also spent some time at the Archives of Michigan in Lansing, sifting through their vast collection for inspiration. “Our sincere desire is that this music will inspire others to wholeheartedly protect the land and water throughout the Great Lakes,“ says Bethany. “We also hope that it encourages listeners to reflect upon the region’s history in an effort to pave a clearer path for future generations.”
